Safeguarding for Designated Leads

This comprehensive five-hour training course is delivered over two engaging sessions (typically on consecutive days or split across a morning and afternoon). Designed for those in a safeguarding lead role or management role across faith, charity, and education settings. The course is applicable across all UK nations - Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales. Participants are required to attend both sessions to complete the course.

Through a blend of interactive learning, real-world scenarios, and reflective practice, the training explores the legal duties and practical responsibilities of safeguarding leads in depth. Participants will develop confidence in identifying vulnerability and risk, managing complex and high-risk concerns, and responding appropriately to allegations, including those involving senior leaders or those in positions of trust.

The course provides detailed guidance on effective recording and secure information management, alongside clear pathways for internal and external reporting, including engagement with statutory agencies, trustees, and regulatory bodies. It also explores how safeguarding leads work alongside others—supporting staff and volunteers, offering guidance and challenge where needed, and ensuring that safeguarding practice is consistent, accountable, and well understood across the organisation.

Alongside procedural knowledge, the course places strong emphasis on leadership, culture, and wellbeing. Participants will consider how to develop and embed effective safeguarding practice within their organisation, fostering cultures that are not only safe, but psychologically safe—where concerns can be raised, heard, and responded to appropriately. The training integrates trauma-informed and person-centred approaches throughout, supporting safeguarding leads to respond with clarity, compassion, and professional curiosity.

Recognising the demands of the role, the course also addresses the impact of safeguarding work on practitioners. It explores vicarious trauma, decision-making under pressure, and the importance of supervision, support, and reflective practice in sustaining those carrying safeguarding responsibility.
