Safer recruitment

This focused two-and-a-half-hour training course explores safer recruitment as a critical component of effective safeguarding practice. Designed for those involved in recruiting, managing, or overseeing staff and volunteers across faith, charity, education, and community settings, the course supports organisations to recruit safely, fairly, and with confidence.

Safer recruitment is more than completing checks—it is about creating robust, transparent processes that attract the right people and deter those who may pose a risk. Grounded in current legislation, ethical practice, and safeguarding principles, the course takes participants through the key stages of safer recruitment, from initial role design through to ongoing oversight.

Participants will explore how to define roles clearly, develop effective role profiles and job descriptions, and design recruitment processes that reflect organisational values and safeguarding commitments. The course examines how language, expectations, and organisational culture influence who is attracted to a role—and how safer recruitment can act as both a safeguard and a deterrent.

The training provides practical guidance on shortlisting, interviewing, and assessing candidates safely and consistently, including recognising the influence of personal values and unconscious bias in decision-making. It also covers the appropriate use of references, criminal record checks, and vetting processes across the four UK nations, ensuring participants understand both legal requirements and good practice.

Beyond appointment, the course explores safer onboarding, probation, and the importance of ongoing vigilance. Participants will consider how safeguarding continues beyond recruitment, including the role of induction, training, supervision, and organisational culture in maintaining safe practice over time.

With a focus on real-world application and reflective learning, this course equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to embed safer recruitment practices that contribute to safer organisations.
